THE GREAT ADVENTURE
PREVIEW EDITION MAY 1997

Welcome to The Great Adventure, the inner part of Inner Journeys. Death and dying, a subject that has been closed from discussion until recently is resurfacing to the public forum. The success of several recent publications and conferences have shown that we are prepared to take a healthier approach to being with those who are dying than was previously possible. This does not in any way refer to euthanasia, a subject that we will not be covering. It does refer to using available teachings and tools to develop presence and attention in serving the needs of those who are passing through transition. In this newsletter, we will be reviewing publications, audio and music tapes, websites, conferences, workshops, and events related to the field of death and dying.

In this issue we will report on the New York Open Center's The Art of Dying Conference that took place on March 21 - 24 in New York City. We hope that you benefit from this issue and we look forward to hearing from you. Please look for us at our website: http://www.slimeworld.org/innerjourneys/index.html.

The Art of Dying Conference started on Friday March 21, at the NYC World Trade Center Marriott Hotel, Grand Ballroom, where Stephen and Ondrea Levine hosted a full day pre-conference institute entitled: A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as if it Were Your Last, (see recently published book of the same name published by Random House, 1997.) Here, after the initial speeches, the attendees were given the opportunity to take center stage and share experiences associated with the wisdom that always accompanies attendance and service for another in the hours of their passage. This "open mike" approach indicated an attitude that was to prevail throughout the weekend. The presenters, sensing the vast amount of collective experience on the part of the attendees, were willing to work closely with them, in a give and take format. What was to come of this was a definition of the future of hospice itself, which is now integrating relevant knowledge available from several different spiritual traditions.
